Losing your last working key is a different job from copying a key, and that is why it costs more. With no key to clone from, the locksmith has to read the vehicle's key code (from the VIN, the immobilizer, or by decoding the lock), cut a fresh key to that code, and teach the car's computer to accept a key it has never seen. On most vehicles built since the mid-1990s this is done at the roadside in one to two hours. **German cars are the exception, and it is worth explaining honestly.** On many BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche and Land Rover models, the immobiliser will not accept a newly originated key over the diagnostic port. That is the whole reason a German all-keys-lost job is priced at about two and a half times a standard one. It is not a brand surcharge. It is a job that occupies a technician for most of a day, and pricing it like an hour-long job would simply mean nobody shows up. If you still have one working key, none of this applies. Even on a German car it is a straightforward job, which is why a spare costs a fraction of an all-keys-lost call. Bring your driver's license and proof you own or control the vehicle (registration or insurance card). By law, a locksmith cannot cut or program a key for someone who cannot show authority over the car.
